چکیده

Abstract. The seasonally dependent Antarctic sea ice concentration (SIC) budget is well observed and synthesizes many important air–sea–ice interaction processes. However, it rarely simulated in Earth system models, means to tune the former are not understood. In this study, we investigate sensitivity of 18 key NEMO4.0-SI3 (Nucleus for European Modelling Ocean coupled with Sea Ice Integrated Initiative) model parameters on modelled SIC volume (SIV) budgets Southern based a total 449 runs two global analysis methods. We found that SIV sensitive strength, thermal conductivity snow, number categories, related lateral melting, ice–ocean drag coefficient air–ice coefficient. An optimized can reduce root-mean-square error between by about 10 %. This implies more accurate calculation velocity optimizing simulation, which unlikely be achieved perfectly simply tuning presence biased atmospheric forcing. Nevertheless, combinations were recommended, as they could yield better extent than when using standard values.

The Impact of Southern Ocean Sea Ice in a Global Ocean Model

Most of the Southern Ocean (SO) is marginally stably stratified and thus prone to enhanced convection and possibly bottom-water formation whenever the upper ocean is cooled or made more saline by ice formation. Sea ice modifies the heat and freshwater fluxes, which in turn constitute a critical surface condition in this sensitive region of intense vertical exchange. The authors investigate the ...

Thermohaline stratification below the Southern Ocean sea ice

The end of winter stratification within the cold cyclonic trough of the Weddell gyre near 60øS between 5øE and the Greenwich meridian is resolved with the Mikhail Somov data set. The temperature maximum of the Weddell Deep Water (WDW) is, for the most part, less than 0.5øC, but warmer cells of WDW are found. These warm WDW cells have temperature, salinity, and oxygen properties similar to the W...

The effect of sea ice on the solar energy budget in the atmosphere-sea ice-ocean system: A model study

A coupled one-dimensional multilayer and multistream radiative transfer model has been developed and applied to the study of radiative interactions in the atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean system. The consistent solution of the radiative transfer equation in this coupled system automatically takes into account the refraction and reflection at the air-ice interface and allows flexibility in choice ...

Accelerated warming of the Southern Ocean and its impacts on the hydrological cycle and sea ice.

The observed sea surface temperature in the Southern Ocean shows a substantial warming trend for the second half of the 20th century. Associated with the warming, there has been an enhanced atmospheric hydrological cycle in the Southern Ocean that results in an increase of the Antarctic sea ice for the past three decades through the reduced upward ocean heat transport and increased snowfall. Th...
